Per Mertesacker limped out of Arsenal's Premier League clash with Norwich City with a supected hamstring injury that will likely bring an end to the German's season.
The centre-back suffered the injury shortly after half-time of the meeting with the Canaries, with Gabriel coming on to replace the former Werder Bremen defender.
Mertesacker has been in and out of the Arsenal side in the second half of the campaign, with Brazilian Gabriel having often been preferred alonside Laurent Koscielny.
The 31-year-old, who has retired from international duty, has started the last three matches, however, helping his side keep clean sheets against both West Brom and Sunderland prior to coming after 51 minutes in the meeting with Norwich.
