You might remember comedian and actor Jerry Seinfeld putting his remarkable Porsche collection up for auction, right? Well, the cars sold for $22 million at Amelia Island Auction in Florida, on Friday.
16 of the rarest and greatest Porsches went under the hammer at Gooding and Company’s auction event, however, one remained in Seinfeld's hands.
Unfortunately, the comedian won’t be able to enjoy it on the road, as it’s a one-of-two non-drivable 2009 Porsche Carrera GT prototypes. Bear in mind that it was functional (at one point), however, before selling it to Seinfeld, Porsche removed the ECU from the vehicle’s engine-management system.
As a man who knows his Stuttgart rides, Jerry Seinfeld brought some of the most sought after Porsches to the auction, from a 1974 Porsche 911 Carrera 3.0 IROC RSR that fetched $2.3 million to the “star of the show”, a 1955 550 Spyder, that sold for $5.35 million.
Even so, one would have expected significant higher prices for the vehicles, especially as a 1990 962C racing demon sold for “only” $1.65 million – considering that an unrelated Ferrari F50 went for $2,310,000.
Nevertheless, Seinfeld's collection (which included two Volkswagen models) sold for approximately $10 million under the initial estimate. However, before you feel sorry for the man, consider the fact that his 1960 Beetle fetched $121,000.
