SERAP Threatens To Sue UI, AAUA Over Increased Fees

The Socio-Economic Rights And Accountability Project, (SERAP) has asked President Muhammadu Buhari to direct the Attorney General of the Federation to prosecute all former governors indicted in one corruption cases.

The agency also asked the Federal Government to prosecute serving governors who are involved in corruption cases, at the expiration of their tenure.

SERAP made the appeal in a statement issued by its Deputy Director, Timothy Adewale, on Sunday.

According to the organization, the delay of the trial of several former governors accused of corruption and money laundering in different high courts across the country gives a negative signal to the public that they are untouchable.

The statement read in part, “The trial of several former state governors accused of corruption and money laundering have continued to linger in different high courts in the country. Some of the grand corruption cases involving former governors started in 2007 are yet to properly commence.

“The continuing delay in the prosecution of former governors alleged to have committed acts of corruption is a significant factor contributing to impunity of those engaging in grand corruption, thereby posing a serious threat to probity in public life, the rule of law and respect for human rights”.

SERAP, therefore, threatened to take legal actions if the Federal Government does not take over the cases of alleged corruption against past governors found wanting.
