One would have thought that four performance versions of the Golf are enough to cover every base, however, VW is reportedly thinking about adding one more.

A VW high-ranking official spoke to Autocar, revealing that an ever more hardcore version of the Golf GTI Clubsport is on the cards.

The Lightweight GTI Clubsport drops the rear seat and lots of sound deadening material in order to shed some weight off the 1,375 kg figure of the normal model. The turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol engine is up by 20 hp to a nice, round 300, with the extra power coming from an increase in boost pressure and a higher ignition cut-out.

Wolfsburg engineers were inspired by the Porsche 911 GT3, and it’s meant to attract customers looking for a road-legal track oriented hatchback, in the vein of the Renault Megane RS Trophy.

The project has not been green-lit yet, as VW’s supervisory board is cautious about the message the new car will bring in the midst of the emissions scandal.

Still, it might make an appearance as a thinly veiled concept at the Wörthersee fan festival in May before the board takes the final decision.
