"He is desperate to make a quick return, knows exactly how huge United are as a club and would put smiles back on the faces of the players."

Jamie Redknapp - Yes

The Sky Sports pundit believes the arrival of Pep Guardiola at Manchester City now means that Manchester United have no option but to appoint Jose Mourinho.

"When the news was announced that Guardiola will join Manchester City in the summer, shockwaves were sent around the Premier League," Redknapp said.

"Manchester United, and Chelsea to some extent, need to respond.

"United are no longer able to attract any manager, and that would have hit them like a juggernaut. They need to react; they cannot just sit back.

"They've got to get someone that has a proven track record of winning trophies, and that man has to be former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho.

"A year or two years ago, I wouldn't have said it, but United haven't really got a choice now - they've got to make a statement.

"Jose brings a lot of coverage to your club, both good and bad, but he is still box office and I see him at United next season, unless Louis van Gaal can go and win something."

Jamie Carragher - No

Speaking in his regular slot on Sky Sports' Monday Night Football, the former Liverpool captain questioned whether Jose Mourinho's style of management was appropriate for a club of Manchester United's history and philosophy.

"Is Jose the perfect fit for United? I'd say no," Carragher said on Monday Night Football.

"The reason being, at United over the last 50, 60 years, what they're about is winning trophies. Jose massively ticks that box.

"But bringing young players through, no [he doesn't tick that box]. Exciting football, cut-throat football, going for every game? No, he doesn't tick that box either.

"If Mourinho is manager that they go for, it will show the fear that United’s board and some of the supporters have of other teams getting away from them and Pep Guardiola going to Manchester City.

"They’re that desperate to get back to winning trophies they’re forgetting the principles that have made the club what it is over the past 50 years.”

Thierry Henry - Yes

Henry countered Carragher's claims that Mourinho would not be the right fit by claiming Ed Woodward and the United board had little option but to give the former Chelsea manager a chance at Old Trafford.

Speaking before Pep Guardiola was officially appointed as Manuel Pellegrini's replacement, Henry insisted United would need to react immediately.

"They are scared at what is happening over the other side of the city," Henry said.

"If Manchester City get Pep, they will have that feeling that they need to get someone big.

"Mourinho can be the perfect fit. At his time at Chelsea at the beginning, with Robben and Duff, Gudjohnsen in the middle, and Didier Drogba arrived after, they were a good team going forward.

"They were kind of exciting. He won the league in Spain outscoring the Barcelona of Guardiola so I think he can be a good fit."

Alan Shearer - Yes

Match of the Day stalwart, Alan Shearer, believes Jose Mourinho's world-class calibre as a manager makes him the logical candidate to replace Louis van Gaal, should the United board chose to let the Dutchman go.

“I would not be shocked if Mourinho was to manage Manchester United next, he’s favourite in the betting to do so for a reason. United will be after a world-class manager if they do choose to let Louis van Gaal go," Shearer wrote in his Sun Sport column.

“This will only put extra pressure on the Dutchman with the United board knowing that Mourinho is available.

“I don’t think it will be long before he is back in the game. Either way, he’ll end up at a massive football club next.”

Grame Souness - No

Former Liverpool manager and captain Graeme Souness believes Manchester United would be mad not to give Ryan Giggs an opportunity to prove himself as their long term solution.

"I’m not sure [if Mourinho will be the next manager],” Souness told Sky Sports.

“I go back to the last time Jose was rumoured to be going there and Sir Bobby Charlton came out and said ‘no way’. Sir Alex Ferguson is a fan. How big a fan? I don't really know.

“But the reasons Sir Bobby Charlton gave a few years go would still be there.”

Rio Ferdinand - Maybe

"I think if they bring someone else in, it is a huge decision because if this doesn’t go right, it could be a long cycle. We don’t want to be a repeat of what Liverpool have gone through. Manchester United don’t want that long time in the wilderness of not really winning or being successful and not challenging for titles," said Ferdinand.

"That can’t afford to happen at Man United. The problem they’ve got now is who they choose.

"Are they going to go for someone who has had success, who knows how to manage teams like Jose Mourinho, or will they go with someone who is already in the house like Ryan Giggs?

"That’s the problem they have got and the questions that have to be asked. If I knew the answer to that question, I would be the CEO."
