Simply Exponential Consult Limited has initiated the rollout of the International Labour Organization’s (ILO) Start and Improve Your Business (SIYB) Train-the-Trainer (TOT) Programme across key Nigerian cities, Lagos and Abuja. This significant initiative aims to bolster the capabilities of professionals dedicated to supporting entrepreneurs and small businesses throughout Nigeria.
Morounfayo Williams, the Founder and Managing Partner of Simply Exponential Consult and an ILO-certified master trainer, announced the programme during a press conference in Lagos. She highlighted that this undertaking is designed to cultivate a robust network of proficient trainers capable of guiding aspiring and existing business owners.
Programme Structure and Global Reach
The ILO SIYB programme, which has seen successful deployment in over 90 countries worldwide, is structured to provide practical, standardised training modules. These modules are meticulously crafted to assist nascent entrepreneurs in developing viable business concepts, establishing formal enterprises, and enhancing the performance of their existing ventures. The initiative is a two-week hybrid certification programme, combining both in-person and online learning components.
Simply Exponential Consult is set to deliver the intensive TOT course from 21 September to 5 October. Following this initial phase, participants will enter a 30-day implementation and mentoring period. During this crucial stage, trainees will conduct step-down training sessions for others, receiving observation and support to ensure they meet international standards prior to receiving their official certification.
Key attributes of the programme include three fundamental training packages:
- Generate Your Business Idea (GYBI): Focuses on helping individuals conceptualise and refine business ideas.
- Start Your Business (SYB): Provides guidance on the practical steps involved in launching a new enterprise.
- Improve Your Business (IYB): Offers strategies for enhancing the efficiency and profitability of existing businesses.
The programme incorporates hands-on learning tools such as a business simulation game, role-playing exercises, "life cards," and practical record-keeping assignments. Additionally, participants receive 12 comprehensive manuals covering critical areas like business planning, marketing strategies, adult learning principles, and trainer guides.
Target Audience and Expected Impact
The TOT programme is specifically tailored for a diverse group of professionals. This includes business development service providers, SME Desk Officers within financial institutions, managers of enterprise development organisations, and microfinance institutions. It also targets trainers with a passion for entrepreneurship education, as well as other individuals actively involved in supporting Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs).
Ms. Williams described the TOT as a pivotal opportunity to foster a multiplier effect, creating a cadre of certified trainers who will subsequently deliver standardised, practical business support across the nation. “The programme equips trainers with methodologies to help entrepreneurs separate personal and business finances, prepare viable business plans, and build sustainable enterprises,” she explained.
Private Sector Endorsement
Affirming the private sector's support for such initiatives, Mr. Adewale-Smart Oyerinde, the Director-General of the Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association (NECA), conveyed his organisation's backing for programmes that strengthen small businesses, generate employment opportunities, and contribute to national prosperity.
Mr. Oyerinde, whose remarks were delivered by Adenike Adebayo-Ajala, underscored the indispensable role of structured business training. He highlighted that comprehensive training encompassing costing, record-keeping, facilitating access to finance, and fostering market linkages is crucial for the survival and sustained growth of businesses within Nigeria’s intricate economic landscape. “Nothing happens by chance. Opportunity only becomes meaningful when it reaches the last mile,” Mr. Yusuf concluded, stressing the importance of effective implementation.
