WASHINGTON — Steven Matz could be facing elbow surgery to treat a bone spur that has forced him to deal with lingering discomfort, multiple sources told Newsday on Monday.
Matz’s elbow ligament is not damaged. But the spur is causing pain, and the Mets are concerned that it has impacted his performance.
General manager Sandy Alderson will be part of a meeting to make a call on whether Matz will pitch through discomfort or have the issue corrected surgically.
Matz is scheduled to start on Wednesday but the Mets have not committed to it. Matz is 7-3 with a 3.29 ERA and 73 strikeouts in 76 2/3 innings this season.
