LOS ANGELES — The cycle has been both familiar and burdensome, and for Steven Matz, it has also been unrelenting. Once more, the Mets pitcher must deal with an injury, this time soreness that is plaguing his left elbow.
Matz’s next start, originally scheduled for Saturday in Colorado, has been scrubbed, Mets manager Terry Collins said Wednesday night. For now, the Long Island lefthander is not scheduled to undergo more tests. However, when the team concludes its 11-game West Coast swing, Matz will visit team doctors in New York.
Collins said Matz’s elbow “flared up” after his last start against the Dodgers on Monday.

Logan Verrett will tentatively make the spot start, though if he’s needed in relief, the Mets may pluck a pitcher from the minors. In any case, Collins said an extra pitcher will be summoned to protect the Mets as they enter the bullpen-wrecking thin air of Coors Field. The Mets will go one position player short until it’s determined whether Matz must go on the disabled list.
Lefty Sean Gilmartin appears to be in line to be promoted.
Matz, 24, is 5-1 with a 2.86 ERA. He has won his last five starts, posting a 1.09 ERA in that span.
