But Broad still has a part to play on this tour and Bayliss confirmed he will bowl at the Bullring on Friday night less than a month after he won the Test series in Johannesburg with a brilliant afternoon spell of six for 17.
Broad has not played in the first three one-day matches because England have stuck by their younger players. But David Willey, Reece Topley and Chris Jordan leaked runs at more than eight an over on a flat pitch in Centurion on Tuesday night and Bayliss believes the team needs Broad’s experience.
“I thought in the first two games we bowled quite well but at Centurion against quality batters we bowled way too many half volleys and long hops,” said Bayliss. “We had a good chat about it after the game. Early on if there is no swing or seam it is about getting the ball in the right area, make the batter hit a good ball for four and then you have a better chance of taking a wicket.
“It was always on the cards for him (Broad) to play some cricket on this tour once he got selected. Yes he has got that experience and it will be good to have that especially at the Wanderers where he had success in Test cricket.”
Dawson has been selected on the say so of Flower, who believes he has the character to play under pressure. He also impressed Bayliss in a net session with the England batters in the UAE in October.
“He has skills with the ball, bats and bowls but the thing that impressed me is he has something about himself,” said Bayliss. “He has a little bit of toughness about him, a cheekiness around practice and putting a bit of pressure on the batter when he bowls a good ball. There’s a few oohs and arghs and appealing. It is a bit of a gut feel watching a guy and how he goes about his cricket and holds himself. He seemed to adapt very easily and quickly.”
Bayliss revealed that Mark Ramprakash, the England batting coach, will be joining the Kolkata Knight Riders for a brief secondment during the IPL. It was also confirmed that Paul Collingwood and Mahela Jayawardene will be part of England’s backroom team at the World Twenty20.
