Jonny Williams made his comeback as Sunderland U23s lost against Arsenal at Eppleton.
Williams had been out of action since suffering a shoulder injury in mid-November, which required surgery.
But the Wales international midfielder completed 80 minutes in front of manager Chris Coleman, who was watching from the stands, and looked comfortable as he eased his way back towards match-fitness.
However, Sunderland were well-beaten by an impressive Arsenal side, with Emile Smith-Rowe and Tyreece John-Jules scoring before the break.
Elliot Embleton briefly brought Sunderland back into the game at 2-1, but John-Jules’ second goal of the game snuffed out any hope of a comeback.
Defeat means Elliott Dickman’s side stays third-bottom of the Premier League 2 table, two points ahead of Manchester United and four above Spurs, although those sides each have two games in hand of the Black Cats.
Lee Connelly fashioned an early chance, only to see his shot from inside the box looped over the keeper and wide.
But Arsenal soon took charge and Sunderland were on the back foot for the majority of the first half.
Max Stryjek dealt with a couple of long-range efforts, but there was nothing the Poland U21 international could do to prevent Smith-Rowe’s opener on 24 minutes.
The Arsenal man received the ball just outside the area to the left of goal and curled his shot beyond the diving keeper and into the right-hand side of the net.
Two minutes later, the Gunners should have doubled their lead when Reiss Nelson raced into the area down the right, but he dragged his low shot across the face of goal with only Stryjek to beat.
Arsenal did made it 2-0 on 34 minutes when John-Jules got on the end of a low ball into the area and dinked his finish over Stryjek, who had come off his line to dive at the striker’s feet.
And only a smart save from Stryjek to tip Xavier Amaechi’s deflected shot over the bar prevented further damage in first-half injury time.
Embleton gave Sunderland a route back into the game in the 64th minute when his low shot on the turn from eight yards went through the keeper’s legs to halve the deficit.
But any hope was shortlived as John-Jules added his second goal and Arsenal’s third just two minutes later, with a close-range finish.
