Michael Carrick and Daley Blind have been fielded in front of Sergio Romero as the Red Devils attempt to overturn a 2-1 deficit from the first leg in Denmark

Louis van Gaal has been forced to name a makeshift defence for Manchester United's Europa League round-of-32 second leg against Midtjylland.

The under-fire boss has to overturn a 2-1 scoreline from the side's first-leg encounter, but has fielded a side without regular centre-backs.

Instead, Michael Carrick has been drafted in at centre-back alongside Daley Blind, himself having traditionally been a midfield player, despite not having even played together in the middle of the park.

United's injury situation has particularly ravaged the full-back positions, with Guilermo Varela and Joe Riley counted upon to perform in Matteo Darmian, Antonio Valencia and Luke Shaw's absence.

And Jesse Lingard, Juan Mata and Memphis Depay have been fielded in support of lone striker Anthony Martial as the Red Devils attempt to turn around the tie.

Pione Sisto, scorer of the opener in the first leg last Thursday, is in Midtjylland's starting XI while match-winner Ebere Onuachu begins from the bench.

Manchester United: Romero; Varela, Carrick, Blind, Riley; Schneiderlin, Herrera; Lingard, Mata, Memphis; Martial.

Subs: J. Pereira, Rojo, Poole, McNair, Love, A. Pereira, Rashford.

Midtjylland: Andersen, Romer, Hansen, Bodurov, Novak, Sparv, Poulsen, Olsson, Hassan, Sisto, Urena.

Subs: Dahlin, Jensen, Nielsen, Royer, Pusic, Onuachu, Kadlec.
