He has defied the odds to nullify the threat of Thomas Muller, Mario Gotze, and Mesut Ozil, only one goalkeeper has made more saves than him at Euro 2016 and he has been the biggest surprises of the competition so far. But still, despite the attention that Michael McGovern has received for his incredible performances, he still has no idea where he will play football next season.
The Northern Ireland shot-stopper finished third-from-bottom in the Scottish Premiership with Hamilton Academical last season and is now a free agent but, if he were in any doubt over how bright his future is at 31-years-old, he can be sure to attract a few offers following his heroics in France.
While Northern Ireland lost two of their three group-stage games, McGovern was crucial in ensuring that they made it into the next round. The Enniskillen-born keeper put in a solid display in the defeat by Poland to prevent his side falling further than a goal behind, while Ukraine came close several times as Michael O'Neill's men picked up a vital 2-0 win.
With Kyle Lafferty and Conor Washington misfiring up front, McGovern certainly has been the hero for his country.
And with Gareth Bale, Aaron Ramsey and Co. coming up in the last-16, O'Neill's men will feel that they have a good chance of advancing as long as they have such a reliable No.1.
"Michael has had a magnificent tournament; he made lots of saves against Germany. That's well documented, well written and he deserved every plaudit that he has got," the manager told reporters ahead of Saturday's second-round tie.
"It hasn't been easy for him, to be No.1 for his country, to establish himself, so I hope he gets all he deserves at the end of this tournament. I have seen him make a lot of great saves, save a lot of penalties too.
"My job is to make sure we are as well prepared as possible and Michael will play a huge role in that. It gives us confidence knowing he is in such great form."
It is a fabulous spell for a goalkeeper who has not had the brightest or most rewarding of careers. He spent seven years on the books at Scottish giants Celtic but failed to make a single first-team appearance. His first breakthrough came through a loan spell at Stranraer in Scotland's third tier, before he was sent to St Johnstone, though he only turned out for the senior squad once in the First Division (now the Championship).
A move to Dundee United did not work out and so he was moved back down to the second tier, spending two seasons as a crucial member of a Ross County side who finished fifth and then eighth in a 10-team league.
He had, though, it seemed, found his level, as he moved on to Falkirk in the same division, spending three seasons as a key player. After two seasons at Hamilton, he finds himself out of contract and without a team but his future has never been more promising.
Reports in Britain have seen him linked to a move to the Premier League, with Southampton said to be leading the chase to sign him, but it is said that there are teams in Europe tracking him and it is all thanks to his three impressive performances.
"The phones have been a little bit busier over the last 12 hours," his agent, Andrew Evans, told BBC Scotland. "[His form in France] has opened opportunities on a European level. It has opened the door to a number of clubs in Europe that, without this exposure of Euro 2016, may not have come to the fore. His performances in the whole tournament have been excellent."
McGovern has won the hearts of more than his compatriots, coach and agent, however. After his stellar performance against Die Mannschaft, ex-Arsenal and Germany goalkeeper Jens Lehmann says that he will try to orchestrate a move to the Bundesliga for him.
"He's fantastic; he kept them in the game several times,” Lehmann told the BBC. "I've heard he's a free agent now. Can he speak German? I might ask a couple of clubs to take him after that performance.
"On the highest level, to play like that... I'm wondering why he is a free agent."
And now McGovern will be called upon to do what three goalkeepers – including Joe Hart and Igor Akinfeev – have failed to do: stop Gareth Bale.
The €100 million man has been the standout performer so far but McGovern has been just as impressive and Goal's keeper of the group stage will be confident that he can restrict the Real Madrid superstar, just as the likes of Muller, Gotze and Robert Lewandowski were unable to threaten him.
"In the last two years, I've been playing in the Premier League in Scotland, which has really taken me on to the next level," he said recently.
"I'm ambitious; I want to play at the highest level I can. It's a nice position to be in [playing these games] when you're going out of contract."
As McGovern looks to attract what will doubtless be the biggest contract of his entire career, stopping the most dangerous forward in the competition will boost his chances of playing at a top club in Europe.
