The lists are in, the squads are finalised and each Premier League side now has it's pool of players to choose from between now and the January transfer window.

With only 25 players spaces up for grabs (as well as an unlimited volume of Under-21 players), competition for places is understandably high.

Not everybody is guaranteed a spot though, regardless of their reputation within the game. Here, we look at eight players who will be looking on from the sidelines for the next few months, after failing to be registered by their club for the forthcoming Premier League campaign.

1. Younes Kaboul (Watford)

One surprising, but perhaps not shocking, absentee from Watford's 25-man squad is former Tottenham defender Younes Kaboul.

The 32-year old has been cast adrift from the first-team setup for a number of months, with manager Javi Gracia confirming in August that while Kaboul is still with the club; “he’s fit but he’s not training with the team.”

Ahh, that will be that then.

2. Andy King (Leicester)

Leicester City midfielder and Premier League winner Andy King is another surprising absentee, given his experience at the highest level.

The 29-year-old was celebrating title glory two years ago, but now finds himself looking on from the outside - with his fate seemingly sealed when he was shipped out on loan to Swansea back in January.

Now back with the Foxes, King was unable to secure a permanent move away from the King Power Stadium - and now faces four months of abject boredom watching on from the sidelines.

3. Yohan Benalouane (Leicester)

Leicester teammate Yohan Benalouane is another prominent member of the Foxes squad not to be considered part of manager Claude Puel's plans.

His absence is perhaps more understandable, given the wealth of central defender options available to Puel.

Wes Morgan, Jonny Evans, Harry Maguire, Caglar Soyuncu are all ahead of Benalouane in the pecking order, so the Tunisian will have to adjust to amusing himself on the training pitch until he can potentially source a move in January.

4. Rolando Aarons (Newcastle)

Despite finding room for misfit defender Achraf Lazaar in their 25-man squad, Newcastle were unable to accommodate wide man Rolando Aarons.

Once heralded as an exciting, talented up and coming prospect by the St James' Park faithful, Aarons fall from grace has been rather spectacular.

Unfancied by Rafa Benitez, he was shipped out on loan to Hellas Verona last season in an attempt to get some much needed game time. The move didn't pan out as planned, with Aarons set to spend the next few months working on a few things in training - probably with the youth team.

5. Lazar Markovic (Liverpool)

What a fall from grace it's also been for Liverpool winger Lazar Markovic. Hailed as one of the hottest properties in European football upon his arrival for around £20m, it's fair to say that things have turned out pretty poorly for the Serb.

The 24-year-old has been out all over the place on loan, but has thus far been unable to convince anybody to take a punt on him full-time.

He could still head out of the club to Portugal (whose transfer window hasn't yet closed), but if he doesn't, a prolonged spell rotting away with the Under-23 squad awaits.

6. Vincent Janssen (Tottenham)

Another big money signing who has failed to deliver the goods is Tottenham striker Vincent Janssen.

A phenomenal 27-goal season for AZ Alkmaar convinced Spurs that Janssen was the perfect understudy/alternative/partner to Harry Kane two years ago. Unfortunately for Mauricio Pochettino and company, they appear to have been sold a dud.

Two goals in 27 Premier League appearances and an equally quiet spell on loan at Turkish club Fenerbahce would indicate that Janssen is living on borrowed time in north London. Oh, and so does his exclusion from Spurs' squad list.

7. Lee Tomlin (Cardiff)

Biffed out on loan to Championship stalwarts Nottingham Forest last season, it's little surprise to see Lee Tomlin not registered for Cardiff's Premier League campaign.

A spell with the Under-23's squad now beckons for Tomlin after a return to Forest, or any other move for that matter, failed to materialise. He certainly won't be featuring for Neil Warnock in the first team that's for sure.

8. Anthony Pilkington (Cardiff)

If you're a Cardiff fan, you probably won't be too surprised to learn that Anthony Pilkington is another player who won't feature in the top flight this season.

Cast to one side following Neil Warnock's appointment, it's perhaps surprising that a Championship side has not been prepared to take a punt on Pilkington, given his previous career successes.

Still, Pilkington won't have time to dwell on what might have been - instead he'll be focusing on getting some game time with the reserves in order to force through a January exit.
