Group A will see the hosts take on South Africa, Iraq and Denmark as the Selecao kick off their long road to gold in Rio
The last few years haven’t brought much joy for fans of the Brazilian national team, with many still reeling from the shock 7-1 World Cup semi-final defeat to Germany on home soil in 2014.
August sees the Selecao return home for a major international competition and taking gold at the Olympic Games will offer some consolation – particularly as a young, fresh and exciting squad are already beginning to restore some faith.
The Olympic gold is the last only title for which Brazil are eligible that they are yet to win. 2016 offers the likes of Neymar, Gabriel Jesus and Gabigol a shot at history.
But they will have to navigate some tricky opposition along the way, kicking off with their three group-stage opponents.
South Africa |
Of all Brazil’s Group A opponents, South Africa are considered the biggest test. Coach Rogerio Micale has warned that the South Africans technically strong and well-organised defensively. In addition, they have been preparing for the tournament for some time and have forged a close-knit team spirit.
In preparation for the tournament South Africa saw off a Federal District Military Police side 4-0 inside 70 minutes and arrive at the games in high spirits. Striker Tyroane Sandows is one to watch. Currently playing his football with Gremio in Brazil and will know all about the Brazil side.
Iraq |
Without doubt the weakest opponent in the group, Iraq have been dismissed as merely making up the numbers – but in football there are no guarantees and the Selecao will have to guard against complacency.
Ahead of the tournament Iraq beat South Korea 1-0 which would have been a huge boost of confidence ahead of the games, but they did suffer some injuries and fatigue in that victory with has left a few of their players facing a nervous few days ahead of the big kick off in Rio. Brazil face Iraq August 7 at the Mané Garrincha stadium Brasilia
Denmark |
The Danes look the side most likely to spring a surprise from the group. Despite the setbacks as several clubs refused to release their players for the tournament, Denmark have had a very productive period of preparation ahead of the games, including a stunning 6-2 victory over Nigeria, who have a glittering Olympic history and are one of the favourites for the tournament.
29-year-old Lasse Vibe of Brentford in England’s Championship as will RB Leipzig's Yussuf Poulsen. Back in the tournament for the first time since 1992, Denmark will be hoping for a repeat of their heroics in Rome 1960 when only a great Hungary side denied them gold.
