Liverpool will host Villarreal at Anfield on Thursday confident in their ability to deliver another famous European night under the floodlights.

The Spanish outfit hold a 1-0 advantage heading into the reverse leg of the Europa League semi-final, courtesy of Adrian Lopez's goal in the penultimate minute of the match at El Madrigal.

It was a cruel blow for Liverpool, who, bar the mistake at the death, had been disciplined and well organised against a side who had already seen off Real Madrid, Sevilla, Bayer Leverkusen, Napoli and Atletico Madrid in their 25,000-seater stadium, while sharing the spoils with Barcelona.

As Jurgen Klopp noted in the immediate aftermath, though: "My first thought as everyone around me was celebrating was: 'Sorry, but it is not over, you have to come to Anfield too and we will be ready.'"

This is the Reds' 17th European semi-final and, on nine occasions, they've played a second-leg tie at home. They've won eight of them, drawing the other in the 1976 UEFA Cup when 1-1 against Barca was good enough to secure a spot in the climax of the competition.

At Anfield or on the road, Liverpool have only ever lost thrice in the second leg of a European last-four tie. Adam Lallana, who was incorrectly flagged offside when through on goal against Villarreal last week, revealed: "The manager told us: do not worry. He said: 'Be disappointed for five minutes but no longer - wait unit we get them back home.'

"He told us that we have got the fans and then he said: 'We will make it another magical night next week.'"”

Klopp knows all about winning against Spanish opposition in front of his own supporters. He's triumphed in his last four home showdowns with Primera Division teams in Europe, defeating Real Madrid a treble of times as well as ousting Malaga.

Liverpool have played six Europa League games at Anfield this season, securing victory in four and suffering defeat in none. They'll be assertive as they look to make it five out of seven on Thursday night.
