Three people are feared dead in Bayelsa state after policemen and some youths clashed in Amassoma, host community of Niger Delta University (NDU), on Tuesday.
It was gathered that some policemen and several youths and women were injured.
As stated by reports, a violent protest was staged over the re-opening of the state-owned varsity without definite pronouncements on the fate of the retired workers of the insitution.
It was learned that officials of the state government met with the governing council of the school, council of chiefs of Amassoma community and other stakeholders over the weekend because of the issues.
An agreement for the reopening of the school was said to have been reached.
But the youths of the community were not pleased with the resolution, according to reports, as they were said to have vowed not to allow the school to be reopened, leading to the violence.
Policemen in the area were reportedly overpowered.
An eyewitness said, “They first retreated into the premises of the University and called for reinforcement. Later they started shooting teargas and bullets at the protesters. Many were injured and about three persons were shot and they are feared dead. They were rushed to the hospital.”
However, police in the state say their men did not shoot anyone, adding that policemen were the ones attacked, leading to the injury of one officer.
