Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera has checked two boxes on its list with the new Disco Volante Spyder, its 90th anniversary celebration and the first production "Aperta" in the company's recent history.
Paying tribute to the 1952 Alfa Romeo C52, known as the Disco Volante (Flying Saucer), which is also present at the Geneva event, the Blue Ceruleo (Sky Blue) painted model is based on the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione Spider.
It shares the same 4.7-liter V8 mill paired to a 6-speed sequential transmission, claiming a naught to 100 km/h (62 mph) time of 4.5 seconds and a top speed of 291 km/h (181 mph).
Touring's creation has a front-engine and rear-wheel drive layout, benefiting from a limited-slip differential and a weight distribution of 49-51 percent, split between the front and rear axles. Contributing to its lowered center of gravity are both roof panels, replacing the fabric roof used on the 8C, which weigh just 3.5 kg (7.7 lbs) and can be stowed in the boot, alongside a bespoke luggage set.
The Italian coachbuilder states that manufacturing a Disco Volante Spyder takes six months, once the donor 8C Spider is received, and the car is priced on demand. Only 7 examples will see the light of day.
