The era of autonomous vehicles is upon us and it appears Toyota want to up its game.

Toyota’s Research Institute (TRI), the division specialized in autonomous driving and artificial intelligence, has recently teamed up with Jaybridge Robotics, enlisting 16 engineers from the artificial intelligence software firm that's based in Cambridge Mass.

The partnership between both companies aims to reduce the “nearly 1.25 million traffic fatalities each year worldwide”, as stated by Jaybridge CEO Jeremy Brown.

The Japanese automaker has already been developing its own version of a self-driving car since 2013, and part of the the result is what the company calls “Highway Teammate.” It is supposed to be a highly "intelligent" system, although it won’t be available to the general public for another five years.
