Manchester United are no strangers to classic Premier League encounters having competed for major honours throughout the Premier League era, and they are certainly no strangers to drama.
It’s hard to whittle it down to just a handful of games but that's how exactly what we'll try to do here - from ten goal thrillers to pizza throwing antics, here are six of Manchester United’s craziest Premier League games.
6. Manchester United 2 -1 Sheffield Wednesday (10/04/1993)
It had been 26 years since Manchester United last lifted a title, a little known manager by the name of Alex Ferguson had struggled with some mid-table finishes, and the pressure was on to finally mount a title challenge.
The Red Devils were doing just that, though a little wobble had threatened to derail their hopes after one win in five games. They’d hit a similar bad patch in March the year before, costing them them the First Division title.
United were desperate for a win to avoid another season of heartbreak but things hadn’t quite gone to plan. A penalty allowed Sheffield Wednesday to take the lead and as the clock ticked down, United were heading for another defeat.
Then, up popped an unlikely hero in Steve Bruce. He equalised in the 86th minute before adding his second in the 97th minute of play. In what would later become known as ‘Fergie time’, Manchester United snatched victory in the dying moments before going on to lift the Premier League title.
5. Manchester United 9 - 0 Ipswich Town (04/03/1995)
Having won the first two Premier League seasons, United were once again in the hunt for the title in the 1994/95 campaign. They’d locked horns with Blackburn Rovers throughout the campaign, trading first and second place frequently.
United had just surrendered top spot after defeat to Everton in their previous fixture and were looking for a suitable response. Not even Ferguson himself could have foreseen the afternoon that was to come, as his Red Devils side ran out rampant 9-0 victors over a woeful Ipswich Town side.
Andy Cole helped himself to five goals as United set the benchmark for the largest Premier League victory, a record that still stands today some 23 years later.
4. Manchester United 2 - 0 Arsenal (24/10/2004)
This was a game more remembered for the off field antics than the actual match itself, with the infamous The Battle of the Buffet’ now etched into the Premier League history books.
United and Arsenal shared a fierce rivalry for years having won 11 of the first 12 Premier League titles, though a new pretender to the crown was starting to emerge in Chelsea.
Arsenal were in the midst of their famed ‘Invincibles’ run and were unbeaten in 49 games going into this match. It was a fiercely contested fixture marred with controversy as referee Mike Riley waved away numerous heavy challenges.
Things reached boiling point though when Wayne Rooney was judged to have been fouled in the box, resulting in a penalty for the home side. Ruud van Nistelrooy converted the contentious penalty, before Rooney added a second in injury time to end Arsenal’s run.
The bad feeling would spill over into the tunnel after the game finished, with Sir Alex struck with a slice of pizza in a bizarre post match incident - the culprit would go unnamed for over a decade before Cesc Fabregas confessed that was indeed he who had done the deed.
3. Manchester United 4 - 3 Manchester City (20/09/2009)
United had always been the biggest side in Manchester but their local rivals Manchester City were starting to close the gap. Following a takeover from Sheikh Mansour, a member of the Abu Dhabi royal family, Manchester City were starting to spend big.
City kicked off the 09/10 campaign with four straight wins, including a comfortable victory over Arsenal. They would then meet their old rivals in a high intensity contest that United looked to have edged heading into injury time.
Craig Bellamy would score a dramatic equaliser for the visitors, though the drama didn't stop there as Michael Owen collected a sublime Ryan Giggs through ball to fire home an unbelievable 97th minute winner for the Red Devils, winning the game 4-3.
2. Manchester United 8 - 2 Arsenal (28/08/11)
Whilst some of United’s famous rivals gained ground on them, others simply faded away. Unfortunately for Arsenal, seasons of under performance led the Gunners into this category after six years without a single honour.
Their fortunes were about to take a turn for the worse as they endured utter humiliation at Old Trafford. United were 3-1 up at half time, having controlled the game's opening period. It was in the second half though where United really stamped their authority on proceedings, scoring another five times to inflict a crushing 8-2 defeat upon Arsene Wenger's men.
One to remember in Manchester, and certainly one to forget in north London.
1. Leicester City 5 - 3 Manchester Utd (21/09/14)
Since the departure of Sir Alex, United have struggled to remain competitive in the Premier League title race. They finished in seventh place in the first season after his departure, and were looking to rebuild under Louis van Gaal.
United got off to a slow start, failing to beat Swansea, Burnley and Sunderland in their first four games. After beating QPR 4-0 though, most would have predicted a continued resurgence for van Gaal's side against Leicester at the King Power Stadium.
Things were initially going well, as United coasted into a 3-1 lead approaching the hour mark. The Red Devils hadn't thrown away a two goal lead for 30 years, though that was soon about to change.
The Foxes scored four goals in the final half hour as United fell apart at the seams, in a performance that epitomised their dramatic call from grace. The reaction from Leicester's mascot after the game said it all really..
