Statement from military, citing Secret Service

The suspect that triggered the lockdown on Capitol Hill attempted to breach the White House grounds before heading to the Hill, with police in pursuit, according to an account of the incident sent by the U.S. military command in Washington, which attributed the information to the Secret Service.

"The suspect then attempted to ram the gate at the Hart building and was shot," stated the statement, referring to a building in Congress.

"There are also other injuries due to the vehicle chase and shoot out."

The incident involved a car chase that began near the White House and ended near the Capitol, 16 blocks away.

The shooting occurred at Maryland Ave. NE and 2nd St., about two blocks from the U.S. Capitol.

Shelter in place has now been lifted. People are allowed to exit shelter locations and resume normal activities.

The U.S. Capitol was in lockdown on Thursday after gunshots were fired outside the building, injuring several people including a law enforcement officer, a Senate aide and a Capitol police officer stated.

Female suspect was reported dead on scene at U.S. Capitol.

The House and the Senate were both recessed until further notice.

The White House had also been locked down after shots were fired near US Capitol.

The lockdown has, however, been lifted.
