UN calls emergency meet as 300,000 Syrians flee regime offensive in south

NEW YORK — The UN Security Council will maintain an emergency assembly Thursday to debate the Syrian military’s Russia-backed offensive in opposition to insurgent teams in southern Syria that has pressured some 300,000 folks to flee ot the Jordanian and Israeli borders, diplomats mentioned.

Sweden, which holds the rotating Security Council presidency, requested the closed-door assembly together with Kuwait, Swedish diplomats mentioned Tuesday.

The United Nations estimates that between 270,000 and 330,000 Syrians have fled since June 19 the continued bombings in the southwestern province of Daraa.

For Thursday’s assembly, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs will report back to the 15 Council members concerning the humanitarian state of affairs in Daraa, which borders Jordan.
