President Barrow: to have talks with UN envoy Chambas

The Special Representative of the Secretary-General for The Gambia, Mohamed Ibn Chambas, has arrived in Banjul to have further discussions on stability and nation-building with President Barrow, who is now also in the Gambian capital.

Chambas will also meet with the Speaker of the National Assembly of The Gambia, the diplomatic community, and civil society organizations, according to the Office of the UN Secretary-General.

The UN envoy will assess how the UN Office for West Africa and the Sahel can best assist the political transition in the country.

Chambas briefed the Security Council on Wednesday in follow-up to Security Council Resolution 2237 (2017), adopted on Jan. 19 on the crisis in the Gambia, which requested the Secretary-General to update the Council within 10 days.

The UN official, at the briefing, indicated that his office would spare no effort in supporting stability and nation-building in The Gambia.

“He will not stop to promote a smooth and peaceful transition of power in the country, and further advocate for national unity and reconciliation.

“The UN Office for West Africa has already deployed staff to the Gambia to assist the government in ensuring a smooth transfer from the previous Administration to the new authorities.”

Chambas accompanied Barrow to Banjul on Thursday from Dakar, Senegal, where he had been taking refuge and also took his oath of office, following the political crisis created by former president Yahya Jammeh.

The UN envoy also pledged to provide assistance to help Gambia’s new government investigate human rights abuses under Jammeh.
