The University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, UPTH has announced plans to hold a mass burial for abandoned corpses “littered” in the Hospital’s mortuary. Chief Medical Director, CMD of UPTH, Prof. Henry Ugboma made the disclosure in an interview with newsmen in Port Harcourt. Prof. Ugboma stated the mass burial will be conducted after the expiration of the 14-day ultimatum issued by the management of the Hospital for members of the public to claim their corpses. He stated that the over eight hundred corpses, which littered the mortuary, had become a liability to the management, adding that that the number of abandoned corpses was affecting operations in UPTH. Ugboma stated the management of the Hospital was tightening loose ends to avoid any legal battle. As stated by him, “We are encouraging our people wherever they are, if they have a body here, they should come and claim it because after the expiration of the ultimatum, we will conduct a mass burial for them. “We are already working towards the aspect. What we are doing now is to tidy up the legal angle of this exercise to make sure we do the right thing. “We have not chosen a particular date for the burial but anytime we chose to do that, we will be covered by law. “If you go inside that mortuary you would have seen the State of the place. Corpses all over the place. People can’t just come here and use it as a dumping-ground. “People must not forget what they are supposed to do.”
