BEIJING (AFP, REUTERS)The United States is pushing relations with Beijing to "the brink of a new Cold War", China's top diplomat said on Sunday (May 24), with tensions soaring over coronavirus, Hong Kong's status and other issues.
"It's come to our attention that some political forces in the US are taking China-US relations hostage and pushing our two countries to the brink of a new Cold War," Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi told reporters.
China and the US both stand to gain from cooperation and would lose from confrontation, Mr Wang said, adding that both sides must find a way for peaceful co-existence.
State Councillor Wang, who was speaking at his annual news conference, added that Washington and Beijing need to start coordinating macro policies for their respective economies as well as the world economy.
