Louis van Gaal has explained that naming Wayne Rooney his Manchester United captain was an easy decision because of his team-mates’ respect for the experienced attacker.
The Dutchman faced a tough task to appoint a new skipper upon his arrival at Old Trafford in 2014 following the departure of previous captain Nemanja Vidic.
He eventually opted to go with Rooney and is adamant that giving the 30-year-old the armband was the right call.
"I was very quickly convinced of his personality and that’s why he was easy to work with, "Van Gaal told the United matchday programme ahead of Rooney’s testimonial.
"I quickly decided he would be my captain because I saw also the attitude of his fellow players towards him. They approached him always with a lot of respect and that’s also important when you have to install a captain.
"It is very important that he is seen by his fellow players as a very important person in the dressing room, and there is no question that he is very important at United."
