The American comedian, who played down how big a fan he is of the Blues despite frequently wearing their jersey, feels he may have been a bad influence on the Portuguese
So, you think a run of miserable form with an ageing squad playing overly negative tactics was to blame for Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea exit?
Think again! The real culprit may in fact be comedy star Will Ferrell.
The actor, who has appeared in films such as Anchorman and Zoolander, made a remark to the Portuguese coach back in September that he now feels may have left a lasting – and negative – impression on the out-of-work coach.
With Mourinho sat in the audience at the GQ awards, Ferrell decided to big up his favourite manager’s penchant for pragmatism, quipping: “Keep playing defence, man. Seven guys in the box, I love it. I love it.”
But two months after Mourinho was sacked - in large part because of that defence-oriented style - Ferrell admits he cannot help but feel just a little bit responsible for the role he played in Mourinho’s demise at Stamford Bridge.
“I feel horribly guilty because I feel like I had a hand in getting Jose Mourinho fired,” he explained on the Men In Blazers show. “I'm so sorry. I was just trying to make a joke because I really actually admire the guy.”
Despite having been pictured in full Chelsea kit previously, Ferrell - who now co-owns Los Angeles FC in MLS - also suggested he was not really that big a fan of the Blues. He added: “I just went to one game and they gave me a scarf and then sent me a jersey. I wore the jersey a couple of times and the next thing you know I'm a massive Chelsea fan. That said, I like the colour blue.”
