Hope Solo already was the subject of persistent jeers at the Olympic Games because of her outspoken concerns about the Zika virus. In Tuesday's match against Colombia, she gave the Brazilian fans some on-the-field ammunition for their derision.
Three days after Solo stepped up with several key saves in a 1-0 win over France, the goalkeeper conceded a pair of questionable goals as the U.S. national team played to a 2-2 draw with Colombia.
The U.S. fell behind in the 26th minute on a particularly shaky sequence from Solo, who saw a Catalina Usme set piece slip through her hands and legs before rolling into the back of the net.
Crystal Dunn and Mallory Pugh scored to give the U.S. the lead in Manaus, Brazil, but Usme struck again in the 90th minute as Solo failed to deal with a tight-angled free kick.
While the Americans settled for the draw, the point was all they needed to secure first place in Group G after defeating New Zealand and France.
"I personally gave up a goal I wish I could take back, but I've been around the game long enough to know these things happen," Solo said on NBC Sports. "So I'm going to choose to have short-term memory and put this one behind us — put this one behind me, personally — and just move forward because we got our point, we won our group. We have to focus on our next game."
The U.S. faces Sweden in the quarterfinals Friday in Brasilia.
