After a 3-1 win over PEC Zwolle in their last game of the season, it was not the final whistle in theΒ IJsseldeltastadion that sparked jubiland celebrations among PSV's players and fans, but the ending of a match much further south.
Despite sitting joint top of the Eredivisie heading into the final game of the season, PSV seemed to have little chance of winning a second consecutive title, with Ajax holding a far superior goal difference and facing second-bottom De Graafschap, who had already survived automatic relegation.
Frank de Boer's men were expected to make easy work of winning the title, especially after going 1-0 up in the first half. But one quick counter attack in the 55th minute saw Bryan Smeets put the ball in the Ajax net, giving PSV a shot at the title.
Phillip Cocu's charges picked up a comfortable 3-1 win over PEC Zwolle, but were forced to wait several minutes after the end of the game to find out if Ajax had indeed slipped up, with their match still ongoing.
And as the PSV players checked their phones to see that the Amsterdam side's game had come to an end with a 1-1 draw, the celebrations began immediately and they rushed over to celebrate with the travelling supporters and the celebrations carried long into the night. - Goal
