The team arrived back at their Mariners Park ground at tea-time on Monday following a remarkable 24 hours for the club.

An open-top bus parade through town is also expected to take place later in the week after the team clinched their fourth trophy of the season by demolishing Cleethorpes Town 4-0 in Sunday’s FA Vase final in the capital.

Mayor of South Tyneside, Coun Olive Punchion said: “What a remarkable achievement. Now I think it’s time for them to bask in the glory of their success and soak up the great atmosphere they’ve brought to the town.”

South Shields MP Emma Lewell-Buck said: “It was fantastic to be at Wembley with the amazing crowds.

“Huge congratulations to Geoff Thompson the team and all the back room staff. “I’m always proud of Shields but especially proud today.”

Shields were far-and-away the superior side on display during Sunday’s match, and 13,000 Mariners supporters were able to travel the 300 miles back to the North East in party mode.
