The Frenchman was delighted with the response of his troops and still believes that they have a genuine shot of overhauling Tottenham and Leicester to win the Premier League
Arsene Wenger has said that his Arsenal side were fully aware that they needed to beat Everton to stand a chance at winning the Premier League this season.
Even after the 2-0 away success, the Gunners trailed leaders Leicester by eight points after the game, and Wenger appreciates that his side cannot err if they are to recover and win the title.
“We knew that if we didn’t win we were out of it,” he admitted. “In England it is very difficult to give a balance of the performance. When you lose, it is disastrous but we were not so bad.
“We had our backs to the wall and responded well. I am pleased that mentally we responded under pressure.
“I am not masochistic enough to consider us out of it. Mathematically we have a chance and a game in hand at home. We are not the flavour of the week but if we don’t believe no-one will do it for us.
“We have to be humble and fight in every game like today. Then we never know. We need some performances and some [other sides to drop points].”
Meanwhile, the Frenchman had words of praise for Alex Iwobi, who marked his first Premier League start with a second-half goal, adding to Danny Welbeck’s earlier strike.
“He is an intelligent boy who loves football and is very passionate about the game, keen to learn, and very humble as well.
“He’s 19. He has been at our club since the age of eight.
“I took him in pre-season and I liked what he did. After that he improved very quickly. He did very well. I integrated him and played him.”
