Senator Shehu Sani
Kaduna-Central senator Shehu Sani has urged the President Muhammadu Buhari administration to probe the allegation raised by amnesty international against the Nigerian army.
The rights group had alleged that the Nigerian army raped thousands of women and girls who escaped from Boko Haram insurgents.
But the Nigerian military dismissed the report, saying that it is becoming a frequent ritual by the human rights watchdog, which had previously accused it of rights violations.
However, the lawmaker wants the government to look into it.
He made this known in a tweet.
“I just attended the Amnesty Nigeria launch of their report on treatment of women in the North East,” Sani posted on Twitter.
“The Federal Government shouldn’t dismiss it but should study the report, view it as a mirror and take actions against the perpetrators of the documented gross human rights abuses.
“The amnesty report on Nigeria tells us the uncomfortable truth. It cast the light on the dark corners of impunity. It’s about us, it’s about what some of us did to some of us. The report hurts but it can help to heal, by using it to avert future occurrence.
“All bad precedents begin with justifiable measures.”
