Governor Olusegun Mimiko of Ondo State says his administration’s health reform was geared at delivering qualitative healthcare to the people, broadening access as well as reducing or eliminating inequality in the state’s healthcare delivery system.
Addressing a stakeholders’ meeting in Akure at the weekend, Mimiko said the poor health indices he met on assumption of office spurred his government to initiate policies and programmes which results, he observed, had been acknowledged globally.
“Our home grown interventions such as the Abiye Safe Motherhood Programme which is targeted at bringing qualitative, accessible and effective healthcare to women and children, the ORIREWA Routine immunisation, the Agbebiye which is targeted at eradicating the involvement of traditional birth attendants and faith homes in medical practice, the establishment of dedicated mother and child hospitals; the Confidential Enquiry into Maternal Death in Ondo State (CEMDOS) among others have helped to ensure that “pregnancy may no longer be a death sentence in Ondo State,” the governor added.
He noted that the “maternal mortality rate has been reduced from 317 per 100,000 deliveries in 2011 to 170 per 100,000 deliveries in 2015” in the state.
