David Bytheway has signed a deal with the Bundesliga club to wear their colours when representing them in tournaments for the much-loved video game
Despite never having played professional football, David Bytheway has earned a contract to join Bundesliga side Wolfsburg.
The Wolverhampton native will not be turning up to training with the likes of Julian Draxler, Max Kruse and Andre Schurrle, though. In fact, he will never kick a ball for the club - at least not in the literal sense.
The 22-year-old has not been signed up by Wolfsburg as a player, coach or as a director and will instead represent them in front of a games console to play Fifa!
Having been a professional player of the game for the last five years,Β Bytheway has represented his country at the Fifa Interactive World Cup and has travelled the globe to showcase his skills.
And now Wolfsburg have snapped up his talents, giving him a contract to wear the club's colours and represent them when he competes and shows his videos online.
"It's absolutely massive for me the fact that a team like Wolfsburg have got involved with gaming," he toldΒ BBC.
"It was just something I was doing at home to start with, just playing my friends and wanting to be the best out of them, and all of a sudden I'm a part of a football club.
"I wouldn't mind [training with them], but at the moment I'm still living in sunny Wolverhampton.
"I wouldn't call it a training schedule, but I always try to get in at least four to six games in a day."
While Wolfsburg's players will be going through great physical exertions to improve their game, Bytheway does not need to go through such intense regimes because he likes to keep his best skills to himself.
"You don't want to play too many people because then you give away your secrets," he said. "So you stick between one or two and then you have to wait for them to come online.
"Right now this move is not exactly historic, but in five years time when we look back at this we'll think, 'Wow they really started something here'.
"Less than a year I hope, before the first Premier League team does this as well."
