GUSAU, NIGERIA β The Zamfara State Government has marked a significant milestone with the graduation of 300 local residents who successfully completed the Government Enterprise and Empowerment Programme (GEEP). Each beneficiary of this comprehensive initiative has been provided with a starter pack, designed to facilitate the establishment of their own businesses and foster economic self-reliance.
Collaborative Effort for Sustainable Livelihoods
The GEEP programme was delivered through a collaborative effort involving the Zamfara State Government, the European Union (EU), the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), and other dedicated development partners. This multi-agency approach underscores a shared commitment to promoting sustainable livelihoods and broad-based economic empowerment within the state.
Malam Abubakar Nakwada, the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), conveyed the news via his social media platform following his attendance at the graduation ceremony. He was joined by Deputy Governor Mani Mummuni, highlighting the high-level governmental support for the initiative. Nakwada emphasised that this programme directly reflects Governor Dauda Lawalβs administration's dedication to equipping young people with essential practical skills and resources, enabling them to become self-sufficient members of society.
The administration views skills acquisition as a fundamental and sustainable strategy for combating unemployment and significantly enhancing the economic well-being of Zamfara residents.
"Skills acquisition is a sustainable means of empowerment and livelihood. The state government will therefore continue to equip young people with relevant skills and capital to become self-reliant and productive members of society," stated the SSG, reiterating the long-term vision behind such initiatives.
Empowering New Entrepreneurs
Nakwada further elaborated that the starter packs provided to the graduates are strategically intended to assist them in establishing businesses pertinent to their respective areas of training. This direct support is expected to play a crucial role in stimulating local economic growth across the state.
The graduation ceremony itself was a well-attended event, drawing various government officials, representatives from the collaborating development partners, and, most importantly, the beneficiaries who had successfully completed a diverse range of vocational and enterprise-based training programmes. The atmosphere was one of celebration and anticipation for the future prospects of the new entrepreneurs.
The Zamfara State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to continuously strengthening partnerships with both local and international organisations. This ongoing collaboration aims to expand opportunities for youth empowerment and to consistently improve livelihoods for communities throughout Zamfara, fostering a more resilient and prosperous state for all its citizens.
