Uruguay impressively saw off Portugal as an Edinson Cavani brace saw Oscar Tabarez's side emerge 2-1 winners after Pepe pulled his side back level.
The result sees Uruguay advance to the quarter finals of the tournament where they'll face France, but it sees Portugal wave goodbye as they crash out at the round of 16 stage after failing to really get a real foothold in the game.
Here's three things we learned from the encounter.
3. It Will Take Something Special to Stop Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani
The partnership of Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani has been around for 12 years now, but still defences find the two hard to stop.
The opening goal came from Cavani finding a luscious ball into Suarez who then returned the favour and gave it back to Cavani on a plate, and the 31-year-old made no mistake as he fired home his 44th goal for his country.
Cavani then grabbed his second goal of the game with a beautiful finish which found the bottom right corner to see Uruguay regain their lead.
Cavani and Suarez have notched five goals together so far this tournament, and you'll do well to find a better strike partnership in international football. The pair were a nuisance for Portugal all night, and defences will no doubt find it difficult to contain the strikers.
While Harry Kane currently tops the goalscoring charts for this World Cup, Cavani and Suarez will no doubt be looking at catching the English striker in the race for the Golden Boot.
2. There's Only So Much Ronaldo Can Do For Portugal
There's just no hiding it, Portugal have heavily relied on Cristiano Ronaldo this World Cup. Tonight was just too much for the Real Madrid man.
Having scored four of Portugal's six goals this World Cup, Ronaldo has carried Fernando Santos' side to the round of 16. However, Uruguay's impressive defence managed to keep the 33-year-old at bay.
Like Messi with Argentina, Ronaldo can only do so much. It seems that the task of Uruguay was just too much for Ronaldo, and Portugal need to find a way of not relying on the Los Blancos man.
Portugal have other players in their squad who are capable of showcasing their talents on an international level, but they must step up for their country.
1. Uruguay Should Now Be Considered as Challengers
Despite Uruguay having fantastic players, they've never really been considered challengers for this World Cup. Well, now they should.
Their defence has been just as strong as their attack, and they will cause any opponents left problems. They need to be respected and now seen as challengers.
While Portugal were fairly poor, they are the European Champions. The world class partnership of Suarez and Cavani is good enough for a World Cup winning side, and their strong defence has proved hard to break down.
Uruguay are now challengers and they will no doubt be raring to take on the challenge of France.
