The Academic Staff Union of Universities, (ASUU) University of Calabar Chapter (UNICAL) has declared a 7-day solidarity protest to call for the arrest of kidnappers of the wife and daughter of an academic staff in the medical college, Dr. Ndifon and son of Barr. Aniema of the graduate school.
The protesters are calling on the management of the university to fish out the perpetrators with immediate effect.
The kidnapped persons were said to have been taken away from the UNICAL Staff quarters where they reside on May 2, 2016 and taken away through a ready speed boat in the riverine area of the university.
As stated by the General Secretary of ASUU, UNICAL branch, Dr. Jonas Akung, the institution has over the years had series of security challenges which has obviously proven to be beyond the surveillance team of the university.
He disclosed that the university, in solidarity with their colleagues, decided to shut down academic activities in the institution to draw global attention to their plight in anticipation of a positive response.
Students of the university and some parents have also called for more proactive measures by security agencies towards the release of the kidnapped victims.
