Ingolstadt has smashed its target of selling 1.5 million cars in 2015, after announcing it managed to shift 1,803,250 vehicles worldwide.

That figure is a 3.6 per cent increase over 2014 sales and represents a new record for the German automaker. It also comes despite the fact that the latest-generation A4, Q7 and R8 weren't rolled out to all markets during 2015.

In the United States, the automaker surpassed 200,000 sales for the first time however, is still lagging behind BMW and Mercedes-Benz in the premium sector.

In other markets like Spain and Italy, sales rose by 16.5 per cent and 10.3 per cent respectively. Sales increases were also recorded in France, Germany and the UK.

Audi's range of Q-badged SUV and crossover models enjoyed increase sales by 6.0 cent, totaling 537,950 vehicles. Sales of the new-gen Audi TT reached 29,950 units, an 87 per cent higher than its aged predecessor that was in its final year.

Elsewhere in the range, sales of the A3 spiked by 20.3 per cent to 372,750 units, while sales of the Q7 in Europe rose to 27,050. The A6 enjoyed an increase of 9.9 per cent sales in Europe while deliveries of the A4 climbed by 17.5 per cent in the same region.
