Our spies caught BMW trying out a test mule of the next generation of the successful X5, which will be based on a brand-new lightweight platform.

Even though this prototype is disguised under the body of the current car, BMW is not expected to dramatically change the familiar shape of the X5, with the new model to feature an evolutionary approach of today’s design language. However, don’t let this fact fool you; the new X5 will be built upon their new Cluster Architecture platform (CLAR) - previously called '35up'.

The new platform mixes different lightweight materials like carbon-fiber, aluminum and magnesium to help BMW’s models shed some weight. The flexibility of this new platform means that CLAR will be the core of every major BMW model, from the 3-Series to the 7-Series flagship which also includes the X3, X5 and X6 crossovers.

The engine range will include four-, six- and eight-cylinder units, with German media reporting that the range-topping M version might use a plug-in hybrid powertrain in order to offer 700PS (690hp).

The new BMW X5 will be built at the company’s US plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina when it finally reaches production in 2018.
