President Muhammadu Buhari’s declaration of June 12 as Democracy Day in honour of late Moshood Abiola is nothing however taking part in to the gallery, says chieftain of Afenifere Ayo Adebanjo.
Buhari had made the swap in Democracy Day celebration from May 29 to June this week and likewise honoured Abiola, acclaimed winner of the 1993 Presidential election, with the Grand Commander of the Federal Republic (GCFR).
However, the elder statesman stated that the transfer is inconsequential if Buhari doesn't give Nigerians good governance.
“But if he (Buhari) has now done it because the presidential election is coming, well, he cannot bamboozle anybody with that,” Adebanjo informed Punch.
What we're saying is that if he desires to honour the reminiscence of Abiola and June 12, he ought to implement what June 12 stands for, which is sweet governance and democracy.
“He should restructure the country before the elections to show his genuineness and not just be playing to the gallery.”
He also stated that, “This is as a result of all that June 12 stands for is democracy and good governance. It is just not about individuals being killed proper, left and centre and pretending that you simply don’t know what is going on.
“It is just not individuals being killed on daily basis and after three months, you now get up and say you're beefing up safety.
“People have been complaining about the awkwardness of the lopsided appointments of heads of security agencies since you came into office, but it was not until now that the vice president (Prof. Yemi Osinbajo) said, “Oh yes, we are going to review it” – as a result of election is approaching.
“We aren't any fools on this nation. He ought to know that many people haven't obtained cattle mind, we're properly educated and we all know what we wish. Nobody can come and bamboozle us as a result of elections are coming.
“It is just like he said in 2015 that he was a born-again democrat. Now, he has shown us that he is a dictator. We are not moved by it. It is a welcome idea and yes, it is a thing that ought to have been done. But that he is now doing it because elections are coming, I am not excited by that at all.”
