At least five people have died after the collapse of a three-storey building under construction in Awka, Anambra State capital.
The uncompleted building, located near the temporary site of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, with the highest concentration of students, was said to have collapsed Wednesday evening after a downpour.
As stated by an eyewitness, the collapse was caused by the use of substandard materials and non-professional builders. He added that as he passed by the building, he suddenly heard a loud noise and ran away.
He said about five persons were under the building cooking when the incident occurred, adding that another three storey-building under construction adjacent the collapsed building, which was also being handled by the same engineer is showing cracks on its walls.
“Touch the blocks and you will see that they are just sand. The speed with which they pursued the construction of the building was horrible,” the witness stated.
