Several major airports across Europe have been forced into unprecedented closures and flight cancellations, grappling with the severe impact of icy weather conditions. This widespread disruption highlights the fragility of air travel infrastructure when confronted with extreme climatic phenomena, leaving thousands of passengers stranded and travel plans in disarray.

Major European Hubs Face Unprecedented Flight Disruptions

Budapest Airport announced a halt to all flight operations for both arrivals and departures from 10:25 AM local time (9:25 AM GMT), citing heavy rain and "extreme" black ice. In an update posted on Facebook, the airport authorities stated: "Due to black ice and extreme icing, Ferenc Liszt International Airport is temporarily not receiving and launching flights since 10:25 am for safety reasons. Budapest Airport will continue to provide updates on the developments; please follow the airport operator’s online platforms." Beyond the capital, Hungarian meteorological services issued alerts for freezing rain and significant snowfall as the intense cold front swept across the nation.

Icy Conditions Gripping Central Europe: Budapest, Vienna, and Prague Impacted

The freezing weather has not only affected air travel but also led to widespread delays for train services. Authorities in Hungary have reported the formation of drift ice on the Danube and Tisza rivers, prompting the activation of icebreakers. A rare natural phenomenon, Lake Balaton in western Hungary is currently frozen solid, an occurrence seen only about once every ten to fifteen years, though officials have cautioned the public against venturing onto the thin ice for skating. Meanwhile, airports in Prague, Vienna, and Bratislava are also contending with the pervasive cold sweeping through Central Europe.

Travel Advisories and Emergency Responses in Effect

A persistent and thick layer of ice, which repeatedly refroze despite continuous clearing efforts, formed on runways in Vienna. This forced both Vienna International Airport and Vaclav Havel Airport to divert numerous flights earlier this morning. While Vienna International Airport managed to resume departures by 11 AM local time (10 AM GMT) and arrivals from 12 PM local time, the disruptions continue. Austria’s state railway company, OeBB, has advised travelers to postpone non-urgent journeys due to widespread train interruptions and cancellations. In the Czech Republic, road and rail traffic face similar challenges from ice, with Prague airport operating in a "very limited mode" as firefighters work to de-ice runways. Emergency services in Prague reported treating approximately 50 people for injuries related to the icy conditions. Neighboring Slovakia also saw Bratislava airport close early on Tuesday, with Slovak police urging citizens via Facebook to avoid non-essential travel due to "extreme" ice and snow in the country's western regions.
