A 27-year-old far-right leader made a surprising admission on national television, revealing he has never had sex, just after making controversial claims about women's voting rights. Nick Fuentes, a prominent figure in the far-right group 'The Groypers,' known for holocaust-denying white supremacist views, also confessed to being an 'incel' during a heated interview with Piers Morgan.
Controversial Interview: Misogyny and Personal Revelation
During his appearance on Piers Morgan's 'Uncensored' show, Morgan played a clip of Fuentes delivering a misogynistic rant, where he asserted that women become 'fat, old' and 'talk too much.' Following this, Morgan challenged Fuentes, asking, 'Are you actually attracted to women?' Fuentes affirmed his attraction to women and denied being gay but added, 'But I will say, women are very difficult to be around.'
The intensity of the interview escalated when Morgan pressed Fuentes on whether women should possess the right to vote. When the far-right commentator responded negatively, Morgan sharply retorted, 'So basically, you’re just a misogynist old dinosaur, aren’t you? For a young guy, I mean, have you ever had sex?' Fuentes's response was a stark, 'No, absolutely not.'
Further into the discussion, a clip of Fuentes claiming that women 'want to be raped' was shown. He doubled down on this offensive assertion, claiming 'studies show' it to be true, and reiterated that 'women are getting a little fat.' He openly declared, 'I am an incel.'
Understanding 'Incel' Culture and 'The Groypers' Movement
The term 'incel' is an abbreviation for 'involuntary celibate,' typically referring to individuals (predominantly men) who are unable to find sexual relationships. Those identifying as incels often express resentment over their perceived inability to secure sexual relationships with women, frequently attributing their predicament to feminism, a stance Fuentes appears to echo.
What is a ‘Groyper’, the ‘movement’ Fuentes founded?
Groypers emerged in 2019 as a far-right political movement under Fuentes's leadership. They characterize themselves as 'American nationalists' and share beliefs with white supremacist and alt-right groups. Their ideology includes the belief that white Americans are under threat and advocate for closing the US border. Groypers also oppose feminism and LGBTQ+ rights. Notably, they have even criticized figures like Trump for not being sufficiently right-wing, with Fuentes declaring war on Trump's presidential campaign and opposed his support of Israel.
Groypers are named after a racist version of the ‘Pepe the Frog’ meme, which has become associated with the alt-right.
Groyper is often depicted as a green, frog-like creature, often sitting with its chin resting on interlocked fingers.
The Dangerous Rise of Incel Ideology and Associated Violence
Incels blame external factors for their perceived failures in life. A study on incels published on the UK government’s website identifies them as heterosexual, childless men in their mid-20s. While the exact number of self-identifying incels in the UK remains unclear, a report from the CCDH in September highlighted that the network, though small, has an active membership "at risk of suffering harm and harming others, but poses a threat to a wider audience of visitors as well."
Surveys indicate that over 80% of incels are between 18 and 30, but some individuals have joined at just 12; a shockingly young age to even be thinking about involuntary celibacy.
They are also disproportionately likely to face mental health challenges. Many appear to have poor body image and develop fixations with their weight, height, cheekbones or stature. In addition, up to 75% experience depression or anxiety and 20% report daily suicidal thoughts.
Combined, these data suggest mental health is a major factor in who is most vulnerable to incel ideology – especially since many members report short-term benefits.
Today, most incels swallow the red pill. Taking its name from The Matrix, it supposedly means seeing the world for what it really is.
Attacks linked to incel culture
In 2021, Jake Davison, obsessed with the incel culture, murdered his mother with a pump-action shotgun at their Plymouth home.
In a killing spree that lasted eight minutes, the 22-year-old killed five people – a girl, two women and two men before turning the gun on himself.
One of the most famous crimes committed by an incel was that of Elliot Rodger, who went on a killing spree in 2014.
After killing six people in Isla Vista, California, and at the University of California, Santa Barbara, Rodger took his own life.
The gruesome plot was revealed in his manifesto, a 141-page document that detailed Rodger’s plan to exact revenge on the women who had rejected him.
