The New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has issued a significant warning, asserting that any attempts to steer the nation towards a one-party state will ultimately prove unsustainable. The party firmly believes that political dominance founded on forced alliances and widespread defections lacks long-term viability. Dr. Ajuji Ahmed, the NNPP’s National Chairman, delivered this crucial message on Friday in Abuja during the 10th meeting of the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC). He specifically cautioned against what he described as "blind efforts" aimed at weakening opposition parties, underscoring their essential role in fostering a healthy democracy.

The NNPP's Stand on Political Unity and Collapse

Drawing on the wisdom of the late nationalist K.O. Mbadiwe, Dr. Ahmed emphasized that political organizations thrive only through β€œa combination of the combinables.” He warned that any political arrangement lacking true compatibility is destined for self-implosion. "Those struggling blind-folded to drive us into a one-party State, they must know that the inevitable result of such efforts will directly contradict K.O. Mbadiwe’s first principle that political parties succeed only when you have ‘a combination of the combinables’ in them. A combination of the uncombinables will have only a predictable destination, sooner than later, i.e. self-implosion,” Ahmed stated. The NNPP chairman further highlighted his party's unwavering unity, attributing it to their steadfast resistance against external interference and internal fragmentation, a clear contrast to other political parties that have been compromised by leadership disputes and imposed decisions. He dismissed recent defections from the NNPP as actions by "renegades" who willingly chose instability, remarking, β€œIf some choose to jump from calm waters into a burning fire, we wish them safe journey.”

Concerns Over Nigeria's Democratic Future

Ahmed’s statement comes amidst growing apprehension about Nigeria potentially gravitating towards a one-party system. This concern is largely fueled by a series of high-profile defections by opposition politicians who have switched allegiance to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) at both federal and state levels. In recent months, numerous lawmakers, governors, and party leaders have shifted their loyalties, prompting significant alarm among civil society groups, opposition parties, and political analysts. These observers fear a shrinking political competitive landscape and a decline in democratic pluralism, underscoring the critical need for a strong and diverse opposition to maintain a balanced political environment.

Paving the Way for the 2027 General Elections

Dr. Ahmed firmly reiterated that the health of Nigeria’s democracy is intrinsically linked to the survival of robust opposition parties. He affirmed the NNPP’s commitment to offering a credible alternative in the run-up to the 2027 general elections. Despite prevailing political pressures and realignments, he expressed confidence that the party’s expanding membership and internal unity would solidify its national presence and influence. The NEC meeting was attended by prominent party leaders and elected officials, including Engr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the party’s national leader and Deputy Governor of Kano State, alongside Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo and Buba Galadima. Kwankwaso echoed Ahmed’s sentiments, stating that the NNPP remains undeterred by the recent wave of defections. He expressed conviction that as the general elections draw closer, politicians will increasingly find it advantageous to align with the NNPP due to its inherent stability.
