France recently hosted the pioneering Lumière Summit on 7th September, an international conference dedicated to exploring the future trajectory of cinema and moving images. The summit aimed to address the various challenges and opportunities confronting the sector, and to initiate tangible actions, particularly concerning the impact of artificial intelligence, the promotion of media literacy education from an early age, and the industry's prevailing economic models.
The distinguished event, held in the picturesque village of Saint-Paul de Vence, was co-chaired by French President Emmanuel Macron and President Lee Jae-myung of the Republic of Korea. The summit convened approximately 200 high-level delegates from over 55 nations, including Ms. Hannatu Musa Musawa, Nigeria’s Minister for Arts, Culture and the Creative Economy.
Key Attendees and Strategic Objectives
Among the attendees were prominent international leaders and decision-makers representing the film, audiovisual, and video game industries, alongside notable political figures and creative talents who lend their support to the summit's mission. A statement released subsequent to the summit underscored its role as a vital strategic platform for cultivating new alliances within the realm of cinema and moving images.
The statement further highlighted that the summit presented an invaluable opportunity to demonstrate, through concrete initiatives, France’s enduring appeal and commitment to the development of visual and electronic arts, encompassing cinema, television series, animation, and video games. "The Summit represents further demonstration of France’s commitment to the development of visual and electronic arts,” the official communiqué affirmed.
Franco-Nigerian Collaboration in Creative Industries
In the context of Nigeria, France actively collaborates with the film and audiovisual sector through a range of initiatives. These include providing support for the annual Nollywood Week in Paris, a festival dedicated to showcasing Nigerian films and documentaries. Additionally, there is a significant partnership with the Storymi Academy, designed to enhance the capabilities of emerging documentary filmmakers. Nigerian animators also benefit from participation in the esteemed Annecy International Animation Film Festival.
Beyond film, France is also fostering collaboration within the burgeoning video game sector in Nigeria. This involves several initiatives, such as the Lagos Games Week, which brings together local industry experts from global giants like Ubisoft and Virtuos. These experts conduct training for local developers, organise specialised workshops, and participate in pitching panels. Further support extends to pan-African esports tournaments, partnerships with indigenous game studios to deliver digital skills bootcamps, and assistance for Nigerian game studios to participate in international esports festivals, including the Gamers Assembly in France and Gamescom in Germany.
