Former Independiente defender Gabriel Milito is set to take over from Mauricio Pellegrino as the Rojo's new coach, according to club director Pablo Moyano.
Pellegrino decided to end his association with the Avellaneda team after directors confirmed the ex-Valencia coach and Liverpool assistant would not be receiving a new contract at the end of the current season.
And while talks are yet to take place with Milito, Moyano assured that the 35-year-old was the sole candidate for the job.
"We will have a chat and as long as nothing unforeseen happens, he will be taking over," the director told TyC Sports.
"Gabriel Milito will be the next Independiente coach."
Milito retired as a player in 2012 at the club, and a stint as youth team boss ended in 2014 due to differences with trade union boss and Independiente president Hugo Moyano.
The former defender went on to hold his first senior coaching post at Estudiantes, ironically replacing Pellegrino in that instance, before leaving at the end of the 2015 season.
"We are going to give Milito everything he needs in order to progress without problems and chase the goals we have," Moyano continued.
"We want him for his identification with the club, for everything he achieved and for his plans. I think we will come to an agreement this week or the next. His love for the club is known to everybody." - Goal
