Over N1.6 billion has been spent by Gombe State government in the last four years to tackle environmental challenges, especially gully erosion across the state.

The state Project Coordinator of Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project, Mr. Bala Dozen Nayaya, disclosed this while speaking during a stakeholders meeting with International Union for Conservation and Federal Government Project Management Unit yesterday in Gombe.

He stated erosion is a devastating threat to the economy of the state, adding that gully erosion arising from natural and human activities has ravaged many communities, resulting in substantial loss of agricultural lands, human settlements, grazing lands and roads.

Also speaking at the meeting, the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Environment and Forestry Resources, Mr. Adamu Pukuma, stated that: β€œThe state capital and over 11 local councils were affected by gully erosion. We receive reports almost daily on this.

β€œIt was because of the importance of the environment that the governor created the Ministry of Environment,” Pukuma stated.
