A head teacher of Ahabam Primary School in Asaba, Delta State, Mrs. Sylvia Esoyanya, was on Thursday relieved of her duties for allegedly extorting money from parents whose children were seeking admission into the school.
The Executive Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board, Mr. Sunny Ogwu, who confirmed the sack of the head teacher, said that the head teacher was allegedly collecting the sum of N4,000 from parents for registering their children before admitting them into the school.
Ogwu, who expressed sadness over the action of the head teacher, directed the most senior teacher in the school, Mrs. Benedicta Mgbako to take over as the new head teacher of the school until the matter would be determined.
Ogwu said that the action of the board was to instil discipline in the system as well as serve as a deterrent to other teachers and head teachers who were indulged in the habit of extorting money from parents and warned that anybody caught indulging in such criminal act would face the wrath of the law.
