Singer, producer and stand-up comedian, Kofi Idowu Nuel aka Da Guru, has been in entertainment for over 15 years. He shares his stage experience...
When was the first time you performed live on stage?
I can’t really remember because I started when I was at the University of Lagos.
Performing at your own show for the first time, did you panic?
Well, based on my experience as a stage actor, facing an audience was no big deal because as a stage actor, the first rule is to flow with the audience.
How do you prepare for a show?
I do a lot of research. It’s not about being the most interesting entertainer but by being an enlightened person so that the audience can also learn from you as you entertain them. If you can give people a reason to remember your performance, they will always remember you.
Do you take any stimulant before you go on stage?
No, I’m a natural person. In fact, I don’t smoke or drink.
What do you do on the day of the show?
Well ,the mood of the day determines what I do. For instance, if I have a show at 6pm, I won’t wake up in the morning and start troubling myself because I would have prepared long ago.
Do you eat before you go on stage and what kind of food?
It depends on my mood, I don’t have any special food.
As a popular comedian and singer, how do you relate with your male and female fan?
I make it a priority that what I owe my fans is to entertain and educate them. I live a normal life outside entertainment.
What crazy thing has a male fan done to?
Fans have come up with a lot of ridiculous things. For instance, once they know you are a comedian, they will walk up to you and tell you all sort of things like ‘do you think you are funny’ or ‘crack a joke for us’ and my response has been that comedy for me is a job and not for fun.
What of female fans?
I have never gone extreme with a female fan.
No signing on boobs?
No, I’m even waiting for that (laughter). But seriously speaking, because of my level of consciousness, it has never happened to me.
