The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has stated it was considering pushing for the use of Smart Card Readers, SCRs, for future council elections in the country.
This was disclosed by the INEC commissioner in charge of Katsina, Jigawa and Kano states, Amb. Ahmed Wali, during a meeting with political parties ahead of Saturday's by-Election in Katsina State.
Wali stated states that would be conducting council polls in the nearest future would possibly be using SCRs to ensure quality exercise as seen in the last General elections.
Lamenting the challenge posed by thugs who often disrupt electoral processes during an election exercise in the country, he stated such thugs were often sponsored by their politicians, adding that such development was supposed to be a thing of the past in the country.
As stated by Wali, Nigeria had grown democratically and that thuggery, violence and other related ills ought to be things of the past, calling on politicians and other stakeholders to partner with INEC to ensure successful conduct of elections in the country.
