Joel Campbell is on the verge of completing a loan move to Portuguese giants Sporting - and it is likely to mean that Serge Gnabry will now stay and fight for his place at Arsenal.

The 24-year-old Costa Rican, who had an impressive pre-season with the Gunners, is currently in Lisbon alongside his agent where he will undergo a medical ahead of joining Sporting on a season-long loan deal.

Campbell made 42 appearances for club and country last season, scoring five goals and notching six assists, but his chances of regular game time at Arsenal were low once again due to Alexis Sanchez, Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain all being ahead of him in the pecking order.

Versatile forward Campbell will be reunited with his Costa Rica national team-mate Bryan Ruiz and it is likely to mean that Serge Gnabry will now stay and fight for his place after Arsene Wenger confirmed earlier in the week that he wants to extend the German youngster's contract.

Gnabry has been a key player in Germany's Olympic campaign so far, scoring six goals in four matches, and he'll return to the club within the next fortnight to compete with the rest of Arsenal's forwards for a place in the starting XI.

Following an unimpressive loan spell at West Brom which was cut short last season, Gnabry will be hoping to show his worth in the Arsenal team after making 19 appearances for the club he joined from Stuttgart's academy in 2011.
